The Chaffey Trail: Mildura Station
I love my times wandering the Mildura Station Homestead, and soaking up the atmosphere of years gone by. While it's a great experience, you need to keep a couple of things in mind. First, this is a modern recreation of the originalstation, and secondly, that it is in a slightly different location. This doesn't detract at all from the experience, in my opinion.
The original homestead on the banks of the Murray river and established in 1847, had been in a state of disrepair for many years before it was finally demolished in 1923. The Mildura and District Historical Society later advocated that a recreation be built, due to the historical significance of the site.
The original land plot was no longer vacant, and so the closest possible position was chosen for the recreation... about 200 meters downstream. The work started in the 1970's and was officially opened in 1984.
Things To See
The station consists of the cottage, wool-shed, various outbuildings, a rose garden, and plenty of authentic farm equipment. It really does feel like the "real thing". If you are a rose lover like myself, I will just say the garden is not worth making a special trip to see. There are about 100 rose bushes, and unfortunately none of them have name tags.
Inside the cottage, there are displays of old photographs, clippings, and prints that will help you build a picture of what life here was like in the mid to late 19th century.
